Social Security Numbers

 

he United states does not issue national identity cards for reasons that are legal, constitutional and due a lot of issues related basic human rights. The Social Security number is the number issued by Social Security Administration to every person working in the USA on legal work permits like the L1 and H1. All individual living and working legally in the USA have a social security number. It is illegal to work in the US without a social security number. This number is required by banks to open accounts, get driver license and for employers to salaries whether on a weekly or a monthly basis. This number is required for obtaining a credit card, health insurance applications, apartment lease agreements etc.,. The social security number or SSN is required in event of an individual opting for a 401 (k) plan.

The social security number is obtained from the neighborhood’s Social Security Administration where you live or you work. Generally when in the US on H1 or L1 visa, initially an employee is in a guest house provided by the employer. In that the employee is advised to approach the Social Security Administration in the vicinity of the employers office. Else please look up in the white pages of the phone directory, where under US Government offices will provide for the contacts, free phone number of the Social Security Administration in the area where you work or where your employer’s office is located.

Documents required for your Social Security Number

  • Passport

  • H1/L1 approval and copy of the H1/L1 petition filed

  • I-94 card which would be attached to your passport. ( I-94 is the document which details your entry and departure date from the USA based on the type of the relevant visa which permits you to work in the US)

  • Copies of the relevant page where the visa stamp was made

  • Passports of your family members

  • I-94 cards of your family members

The SSN application form should be filled up and submitted. The SSN card will come to you by snail mail or you will be an temporary SSN number.

There are three categories of SSN numbers

  • The card which have your name and number without any endorsement. This category of the card can be used for all legal purposes and transactions.

  • The card will state it is not to be used for employment

  • The card will state it is valid for employment only with the express approval of the INS. This category is issued for person who come to the US frequently
